The Twiggs County Play
Tuesday October 8, 2024 10:15am - 11:15am EDT
Supporting the success of Black male students in educational settings requires the implementation of evidence-based practices tailored to their unique needs and challenges. In rural Georgia, particularly in Twiggs County, these students face additional barriers due to low socio-economic status and limited opportunities. To effectively support them, evidence-based strategies must be combined with intentional partnerships and inclusive experiences.
Twiggs County Public Schools exemplifies this approach through several key initiatives:
1. Strategic Hiring: Focusing on mentorship and coaching by bringing in educators who can serve as role models.
2. High Expectations: Cultivating a sense of district pride and setting ambitious academic and personal goals.
3. Personalized Learning and Academic Rigor: Offering customized educational plans and curriculum resources that challenge and engage students.
4. College and Career Readiness Partnerships: Collaborating with institutions and organizations to prepare students for post-secondary success.
5. Access to Extracurricular Activities and Leadership Opportunities: Providing avenues for students to explore interests and develop leadership skills.
6. Family and Community Engagement: Encouraging active participation and support from families and the broader community.
These comprehensive strategies are designed to create a supportive and empowering educational environment for Black male students.

Tuesday October 8, 2024 11:30am - 12:30pm EDT
Embark on a transformative journey with "Decolonized Healing," where we confront the 'spirit murdering' educational environments that too often serve as precursors to incarceration rather than incubators of freedom. Participants will acquire tools to nurture resilience, emotional intelligence, and self-efficacy, transforming schools into realms of empowerment and liberation. We'll integrate ancestral wisdom with evidence-based practices to create havens of healing, where Black boys and men can thrive academically and emotionally. Let's unite to re-envision educational spaces as foundations of freedom, where Black youth are equipped with the art of mental mastery for a life of boundless opportunity.

Strategic Moves: Defying the Anti-Black Male Playbook in Educational Systems and Society
Tuesday October 8, 2024 2:00pm - 3:00pm EDT
In this invigorating 60-minute workshop, we'll tackle the pervasive narrative of the 'Anti-Black Male Playbook' that exists in both educational systems and broader society. We'll empower educators and mentors with strategic interventions to dismantle these narratives and construct robust support frameworks for Black boys. Participants will learn how to implement decolonized teaching methods and psychological strategies that advocate for the mental and emotional well-being of Black male students, countering the prevailing deficit discourse. By examining case studies and current research, we'll formulate a playbook of our own—one that writes resilience, success, and empowerment into the everyday experiences of Black boys. Prepare to be part of a vital shift, as we lay down the game plan for fostering environments where Black male students don't just survive but thrive.
