I want to discuss how elements of STEM can be used to motivate and engage a young male's mind. I will move past STEM as just an upgraded "Science Lab" and focus on how the STEM model can be used to engage our boys. I will discuss three strategies for getting " H.I.M." into STEM: humanity, Intellect, and Mechanical.

I am a black male who has trailblazed for over twenty years in the field of Wildlife Conservation and has risen in the ranks of the Federal Government and Academia. I will share my experiences of how I built my career with limited resources, and I will further equip educators and mentors with the resources to empower school-aged black males to pursue career paths such as conservation. While non-traditional, careers in conservation are lucrative and fulfilling.

This session will provide insight into reaching and teaching black boys, with an emphasis on elementary mathematics instruction. As a male African-American educator, I will share strategies and best practices as well as provide evidence-based practices for overcoming adversity. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the culture that they serve among black boys and how to build working relationships to increase student achievement among this subgroup.
