Supporting the success of Black male students in educational settings requires the implementation of evidence-based practices tailored to their unique needs and challenges. In rural Georgia, particularly in Twiggs County, these students face additional barriers due to low socio-economic status and limited opportunities. To effectively support them, evidence-based strategies must be combined with intentional partnerships and inclusive experiences. Twiggs County Public Schools exemplifies this approach through several key initiatives: 1. Strategic Hiring: Focusing on mentorship and coaching by bringing in educators who can serve as role models. 2. High Expectations: Cultivating a sense of district pride and setting ambitious academic and personal goals. 3. Personalized Learning and Academic Rigor: Offering customized educational plans and curriculum resources that challenge and engage students. 4. College and Career Readiness Partnerships: Collaborating with institutions and organizations to prepare students for post-secondary success. 5. Access to Extracurricular Activities and Leadership Opportunities: Providing avenues for students to explore interests and develop leadership skills. 6. Family and Community Engagement: Encouraging active participation and support from families and the broader community. These comprehensive strategies are designed to create a supportive and empowering educational environment for Black male students.

If you are new to school principalship, you have likely been assigned a school labeled “at-risk.” Many of these schools have students who are identified as Black males. Principals of these schools must have a skill set that facilitates an environment conducive to learning, using cultural and instructional best practices to facilitate the process. New principals have an opportunity to start off fresh and on the right foot with proper planning.
