"Get H.I.M into STEM!"
Tuesday October 8, 2024 10:15am - 11:15am EDT
I want to discuss how elements of STEM can be used to motivate and engage a young male's mind. I will move past STEM as just an upgraded "Science Lab" and focus on how the STEM model can be used to engage our boys. I will discuss three strategies for getting " H.I.M." into STEM: humanity, Intellect, and Mechanical.

Preparing Black Males for Conservation Careers
Tuesday October 8, 2024 11:30am - 12:30pm EDT
I am a black male who has trailblazed for over twenty years in the field of Wildlife Conservation and has risen in the ranks of the Federal Government and Academia. I will share my experiences of how I built my career with limited resources, and I will further equip educators and mentors with the resources to empower school-aged black males to pursue career paths such as conservation. While non-traditional, careers in conservation are lucrative and fulfilling.

Sports Ain't IT
Wednesday October 9, 2024 9:00am - 10:00am EDT
All too often, black males' primary aspiration is to be a pro-athlete. Taken further, many parents encourage and invest their children heavily in sports. While there's nothing inherently wrong with advocating and participating in sports, it becomes a problem when matches with a lack of investment and exposure to other future possibilities, IT (information technology) specifically. IT is a set-for-life type of career.

All This Math for Parents
Wednesday October 9, 2024 10:15am - 11:15am EDT
The session will provide strategies and tools for parents to overcome fears and anxiety around mathematics so they will be able to better serve as advocates for their children in supporting their mathematical development in the home. In addition to addressing the social-emotional aspects of math education for parents, the session will provide an introduction to instructional methods that parents can easily utilize in the home with their children. The goal is for parents to be able to prepare their Black boys for math class whereby they will be confident and adequately prepared to navigate math classes in school and proceed to increasingly advanced math classes as the norm. The "Histematics" teaching framework will be implemented throughout the session as a means of making mathematics more relatable and understandable.

Wednesday October 9, 2024 11:30am - 12:30pm EDT
Participants will be guided through an interactive demonstration on how the TI-84 Plus CE can be used to enhance ACT/SAT math scores and level the playing field for young Black males. This technology is not intended to be a replacement for thinking or reasoning. Instead, we will explore how this resource can be used to save time and increase efficiency. This session will also address various 21st century skills such as: communication, problem solving, critical thinking and creativity. In addition, we will explore various ways in which the ACT and SAT scores are used, including college admission, freshman class placement, and scholarship opportunities that young Black males are not often made aware of.

Let's DO STEM
Wednesday October 9, 2024 11:30am - 12:30pm EDT
  • STEM is something that students have to DO. Black males represent only 2% of the STEM workforce, highlighting a significant opportunity gap (NSF, 2019).
  • Early STEM engagement can reduce dropout rates, which is crucial as Black males have the highest dropout rate among all demographic groups (U.S. Department of Education).
  • Black students who engage in STEM are more likely to pursue higher education and careers in STEM fields, contributing to economic mobility and stability (ACT, 2017).
Take part in this OPPORTUNITY to interact with Fun Weird Science strategies as we model engaging hands-on learning experiences guaranteed to keep your scholars hooked. Participating stakeholders will benefit from and engage in a variety of STEM-based activities designed for use as lesson hooks, driving focus, and/or extensions.
